Gianni (Giovanni) Rufini was born in Rome in 1954.
He is an expert of international aid, former Director of VOICE, the Network of European NGOs working in Emergency and Humanitarian Aid (1997-2001).
A former media-man, with a background in anthropology, since 1985, he has worked in development and humanitarian aid for several International NGOs (Relief International, Movimondo, Handicap International, ActionAid, Intersos, NCCI, UPP, ReC) and UN agencies (FAO and UNDP-UNOPS). From 1985 to 1994, he has carried out field work in Ghana, Palestine and Argentina as Programme Director, in activities ranging from rural development to health aid and assistance to street children. He has been engaged in over 60 missions in Africa, Asia, Latin America, the Middle East and the Balkans for project identification, monitoring and evaluation.
Since 1996 he is Associate Fellow of the Post-war Reconstruction and Development Unit, at the University of York (UK). He is Course Coordinator at the Institute for Intl. Politics Studies in Milan, the "La Sapienza" University in Rome and IUAV in Venice. He lectures on humanitarian aid at the universities of Paris Sorbonne (DESS), Bocconi in Milan, Madrid (Carlos III), Washington (American University), Brussels (ULB), the Scuola Superiore S.Anna in Pisa, Legon (Ghana), John Cabot and others. He is also a Research Director with CeSPI and member of its Steering Committee, and Programme Director for the Humanitarian Training Centre "Fields". He is also senior trainer for the European Union Civil Protection Mechanism.

Dal 1996 è Associate Fellow della Post-war Reconstruction and Development Unit dell'Università di York. Dal 1985 al 1994, ha lavorato in Ghana, Palestina e Argentina come direttore di progetti di sviluppo ed aiuto umanitario. Già membro del Pearson Peacekeeping Centre (Canada), attualmente è direttore di ricerca per il CeSPI, e coordinatore di corsi presso le università La Sapienza di Roma (Master in Cooperazione) e IUAV di Venezia, nonché per l'ISPI.
Insegna anche presso la Scuola Superiore S. Anna di Pisa, l'ULB di Bruxelles, American University di Washington, John Cabot University, e Legon (Ghana), ed è stato visiting lecturer presso Paris Sorbonne (DESS) e Madrid (Carlos III), Bocconi (Milano).
Infine, è direttore della rete di formatori umanitari Fields, e membro del Comitato Direttivo del CeSPI, e degli Editorial Board di Humanitarian Affairs Review (Brussels) e The Humanitarian Times (Washington).
